Frequently Asked Questions (FAQS)

What is pasteurization? What temperature is Snowville Creamery milk pasteurized to?
Pasteurization is the process of using heat to destroy pathogenic organisms in foods.
Snowville Creamery milk is pasteurized to just under 170 degrees F for 18 seconds using the
High Temperature Short Time (HTST) method.
What is homogenization? Is Snowville Creamery milk homogenized?
Homogenization for milk is the process of using heat and pressure to break up fat molecules
(the cream) into smaller particles causing them to remain evenly distributed throughout the milk.
Snowville Creamery milk, half & half, and cream are not homogenized. Cream naturally rises to the
top of milk products. To provide a natural product that is minimally processed, we do not homogenize.
Simply shake our milk before enjoying.

Why do we choose to package in paperboard cartons?
We use plastic coated paperboard milk cartons because we believe they protect milk’s goodness better
than other packages. The flavor of milk is affected both by light and its container. In addition, paper is a
renewable resource and eight half-gallon paperboard containers require as much petroleum-based material
as one half gallon plastic milk jug. We considered using clear glass containers, but milk's flavor is affected
by light. Lastly, the cost and waste produced by distributing, returning, and cleaning glass containers
is much greater than our current lightweight biodegradable cartons.

What type of plastic lines Snowville Creamery paperboard cartons?
The plastic that lines our cartons is made of LDPE or low density polyethylene.
There are no BPA (Bisphenol A) compounds associated with polyethylenes.
