Frequently Asked Questions (FAQS)

What is rBST? Do the Snowville Creamery cows receive rBST?
Bovine Somatotrophin (BST) is a hormone naturally produced by a cow. Recombinant Bovine
Somatotrophin (rBST) is an artificially produced hormone given to cows to increase milk production.
The cows we source are milk from do not receive rBST.
Are the grasses the cows graze on sprayed with pesticides?
Bill and Stacy do not tend their dairy pastures with pesticides. Their sustainable farming methods of
rotating and resting the land on promote healthy maintenance of the pastureland. The outer
permanent perimeter fence lines are, however, sprayed with herbicide.
Do the cows receive antibiotics?
Bill and Stacy's cows do not regularly receive antibiotics, nor are there antibiotics in the grain fed to the
cows at the time of milking. Bill and Stacy reserve the right to use antibiotics on a sick cow. If a cow is
sick and treated with antibiotics, she is tagged and her milk is taken separately and discarded. The milk
from a cow that has been treated with antibiotics must test negative before entering the milk tank. All
Grade A milk must test negative for the presence of antibiotics before going to market as required by law.

Is Snowville Creamery milk certified organic?
One of the rights an organic dairy farmer must waive is the right to treat a sick cow with antibiotics.
A Snowville Creamery cow with an infection, such as mastitis, can be treated with antibiotics and therefore,
cannot be considered organic. In addition, organic feed can be prohibitively expensive and of lower quality
due to extended transportation times. We believe that local dairy farmers who practice exemplary dairying
methods provide an alternative to Certified Organic milk, which is often expensive and often
ultra-pasteurized to a temperature of 280 degrees F.
